As we venture into this uncharted territory, we find ourselves grappling with a profound question that Bostrom (2014) first articulated in his seminal work: What does it mean to create a mind without the biological framework that has shaped human consciousness for millions of years? This journey takes us deep into the intersection of computer science, neurobiology, philosophy, and ethics, challenging our very understanding of consciousness itself (Chalmers 2010) .

Our story begins with the current landscape of AGI research, where remarkable developments have illuminated the stark contrasts between biological and artificial approaches to intelligence. Lake et al. (2017) provided groundbreaking insights into this distinction in their influential paper «Building machines that learn and think like people.» Consider the fascinating case of the GPT architecture, which has demonstrated language capabilities that superficially mirror human communication. Yet, like a skilled mime performing behind invisible walls, these systems lack the embodied experience that grounds human understanding. While GPT-4 can outperform humans in certain academic tasks, it stumbles over the kind of physical reasoning that comes naturally to a toddler building with blocks, a limitation thoroughly analyzed in Lake et al.’s (2017) comparison of human and machine learning processes.

This paradox leads us to DeepMind’s AlphaFold, a system that achieved what many thought impossible: accurately predicting protein structures without relying on biological processes. Silver et al.
